South Tynedale Trail follows the route of the River South Tyne from its source via Alston to Haltwhistle across 23 miles of the North Pennines.
The walk we did started from the car park at Alston steam railway station and followed the trail that is adjacent to the narrow gauge railway line towards Slaggyford. We walked for 4km to Kirkhaugh Station and then turned around and headed back to our start point. The trail is partially fenced on both sides but please be aware that steam trains do use the line so best to keep dogs under close control especially as the trains pass by.
Free parking, toilets and cafe available at Alston station.
