Introduction

Perry Wood is set between the villages of Selling and Shottenden and is easily acessed from the A251 Ashford Road that runs between Faversham and Challock.

There is a good network of bridalways and footpaths around the wood.  “The Mount” viewing platform that was used as part of a semaphore chain and relayed messages from London down to the Kent ports was easy to find and provides great views as you would expect.

There is a short accessible walk located near the car park and The Rose and Crown pub was a great find that was dog friendly and had a good vibe with other dog walkers enjoying a drink.

OWTD Verdict:  Easy to find with SatNav and lots of parking available.  We met a few other people on the walk with their dogs but it was at the weekend so if visiting in the week im sure it would be much quieter.  The dog walk had beautiful scenery with a forest kinda vibe to it which made it stand out from other woodland walks.  The viewing platform and pub were a big plus point for us so if you dont mind a couple of steep footpaths its well worth a visit.

General Information

Distance: There are no way marked trails so we plotted one of our own which was a circular walk of around 2.5km ( approx. 1.5 Miles)

Time:  Approx. 45 minutes dependant on pace and how long you spend at the view point and in the pub.

Terrain:  The walk we did had a fairly steep and uneven pathway leading out from the car park,  some rough steep steps leading down from the view point area and another steep section when you leave the pub but otherwise the rest of the walk was fairly flat but still on uneven soil tracks and pathways.

Accessible:  There is a short accessible walk next to the car park but unfortunately the route we took is not accessible with steep pathways, steps and uneven and muddy pathways.

Stiles:  None.

Dogs on leads?:  Yep dogs are allowed off lead.

Dog Bins:  Yes in car park.

Parking:  Free parking in a large car park.

The Walk Details ...

We plotted our own route that is shown above and had the map app open on the phone whilst we walked but you can pretty much just follow your nose and find your way round this circular walk.

  1. Leave the car park entrance and cross over the lane and head up the steep track to the top of the hill.
  2. From here just follow the pathway all the way along the top of the hill past the swing on the right hand side and along to “The Mount” view point.
  3. There is a picnic bench here in front the viewing tower if you want to have a picnic.  From here head down the track next to the picnic bench and down some steep steps to the bottom.
  4. Turn right and follow the trail into the woods.
  5. Keep going until you reach the lane that leads up to a house and turn left and follow this down to The Rose and Crown Pub.
  6. When you eventually leave the pub head slightly over to the right and take the footpath that goes up to the left of the house.
  7. This footpath is pretty steep but you do have another picnic bench for a rest when you reach the top.  Follow the footpath along and past some big dips used by mountain bikers that looked quite good but nobody was there when we passed by so the boys had a run around.
  8. Continue along and you will come out onto the lane next to the cross roads and the entrance to the car park where you started.
