Western Heights Nature Reserve covers a large area of grassed chalk land on the slopes behind Dover Marina. Two large Napoleonic fortresses, The Citadel and the Drop Redoubt, stand partly sunken into the hillside, and St Martin's Battery Field offers amazing views over Dover Castle and the White Cliffs.
Three circular nature trails allow you to explore the whole area, and the Grand Shaft walk leads walkers along the base of the deep sunken ditches, where you can clearly see the scale of the construction. The North Downs Way, the Saxon Shore Way, and the England Coast Path all cross the reserve, which you can easily reach on foot from Dover town centre.
Dogs are welcome at Western Heights Nature Reserve, but you must keep them on a lead in livestock areas.
You can find toilets and refreshments in Dover town centre.
No on-site parking exists, but you can use the small free car parks off South Military Road or pay and display in Albany Place.
