Introduction
Kearsney Abbey Gardens has three main areas to explore.
- Kearsney Abbey is 10 acres of open parkland and lakes laid out in an Informal style and hosts a Victorian Pump House, an Ice House, Open Air Theatre and an amazing tree called the Cedar of Lebanon which is believed to be one of the oldest specimens in the country. Dogs allowed off lead in the area on the opposite side of the lake to the cafe.
- Russell Gardens was originally designed as part of a private country estate known as Kearsney Court and is laid out in a formal style with modern facilities and a natural play area. Dogs on lead only.
- Bushy Ruff is set around a picturesque lake with a footpath running alongside. A popular open space for dog walkers large wildlife area with a lake that was created in the late 18th century. Dogs allowed off lead.

OWTD Walk Verdict
We enjoyed a wonderful walk here, where dogs are allowed off-lead to roam the woodland behind the car park before heading across the lake to the on-lead area. Even though it was quite busy during our visit, it was still a pleasant experience, including a stop at the café. After crossing the road to Russell Gardens, another on-lead zone, we were glad the dogs had to stay on lead—ours would have been straight into the ponds otherwise! At the far end of the gardens near the play area, you can continue on to Bushy Ruff, a quieter spot with beautiful views over the lake. Here, dogs can go off-lead, but they’re not allowed in the water, so we kept ours lon lead and let them have a run in the woods behind the lake instead.
Overall, it’s a fantastic place for a walk, and we’ll definitely be coming back.
Walk Information
- Moderate - A walk with some hilly sections and some uneven pathways
- The woodland behind the car park is set on a slope but otherwise a fairly flat walk with some surfaced pathways
- Accessible pathways available around Kearsney Abbey and Russell Gardens.
- Dogs allowed off lead in Bushy Ruff and in the area on the opposite side of the lake to the cafe. All other areas dogs should be onlead.
- Dog bins available
- Main car park at Kearsney Abbey and has a 2.1 meter height barrier. Parking is free for up to 4 hours
- Main toilets available at the cafe and an accessible toilet in Russell Gardens which is great if your on your own and have to take the dog with you.
- Kearsnay cafe has two rooms, the main cafe which is dog friendly and The Billiards room for private bookings and is not dog friendly.
