Grain Coastal Park is located at the far end of the Hoo Peninsula and divides the River Thames and the River Medway as they enter the North Sea.
The 2 miles of coast line is lined with shell and sandy beaches at low tide and you can view the remains of world War Forts and admire the views across to Sheerness and South End. At low tide you can still walk the causeway to view the World War Grain Tower up close.
Stepped back from the Sea wall the coastal park has woodland and meadow clearings with mown grass pathways. From the car park there is also an accessible pathway that leads you down to the sea wall so all can enjoy.
OWTD Verdict: We visited on a sunny day and the walk along the coastal pathway was windy but very enjoyable. The boys obviously had to have a dip in the sea and as it was high tide they didn’t get too sandy or muddy. We were quite surprised how big the coastal park was with the woodland and grassed meadows to also explore. With a large car park and an accesible pathway down to the sea wall this gets the paws up from Out With The Dog and found it to be a great alternative to say Riverside Country Park in Gillingham. Just bear in mind that there are no toilets or refreshments here so do come prepared. There is a pub and a sumermarket in the village however if you visit during their opening hours.

There is no set route here at Grain Coastal Park. We just made up our own route and if you just head out of the carpark and take the accessible pathway down to the sea wall you can then head right and do an out and back walk to the end of the coastal path. This would be a approx a 4 mile walk and if you wish to also explore the woodland and meadows this could quite easily give you a 5 mile walk. The route above is just to give you an idea of the distance you can go and is roughly what we did on our visit although it was high tide when we were there so we were unable to walk the causeway out to the Grain Tower that dates back to the World Wars.
